You’ll probably never run out of hashtags to describe two of the most amazing locations in Ella. But the Nine Arches Bridge and the Demodara Railway Loop are more than just picturesque locations, they are examples of engineering marvels too. In a time when steel was scarce due to the First World War, the near-impossible task of constructing a bridge between two steep mountains was achieved with just stones and cement. The fact that it is still standing 100 years later, is a testament to the ingenuity of the builders. The absolutely unique Demodara Loop railway line is ingenious too, as the spiral loop is the best way to get a steam engine to drag a heavy load up a steep mountain. It is also the only railway station in the world that is situated right on top of the railway tunnel that leads to it. Both locations are just a 20-minute drive from each other and are considered must-be-photographed-at locations in every instagrammers to-do list. But even if IG is not your client’s thing, visiting them and pausing for a moment to take in their beauty and the ingenuity that went into creating them, is definitely a worthwhile thing to do!
