Kola Kanda: Delicious herbal goodness made locally

Looking for an alternative to your morning Kale shot? Look no further! The humble Sri Lankan Kola Kanda will answer your nutritional needs and be a whole lot easier on your palate. Made with white or red rice, coconut milk and an infusion of medicinal and nutritional leaves, this traditional herbal congee is quite delicious and easy to consume. Most prominent amongst the leafy goodness in Kola Kanda are Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica), Hathawariya (Wild Asparagus) and Karapincha (Curry Leaves). It’s a tried and tested recipe that can be traced all the way back in time to when Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. Since then, young and old have enjoyed it as a rejuvenating morning meal that provides good sustenance to meet the needs of the day. Of course, since its origins, the recipe has been tinkered with, so you will find many variations in different regions of the country. But, the overarching factor of all Kola Kandas, is that it’s about nutrition first. So do give it a try as you explore Sri Lanka on your next visit!
